Activity Outline
My answer is simple – the interpretation of an OCT can be challenging for even the most experienced clinician. However, have we been taking OCT imaging for granted? Is there even more value to be gained from this sophisticated tool?
Many of my patients ask why this test needs to be repeated when their optometrist has assessed them in the same way.
Eye care professionals increasingly employ imaging technology as standard practice in clinic consultations. In fact, for the younger generation of clinicians, assessing a patient without the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) may seem somewhat foreign.
Learning Objectives
- Understand what OCT imaging can practically achieve and the limitations of this diagnostic tool
- Realise how OCT can help prevent misdiagnosis
- Be aware of clinical scenarios that require investigations other than OCT for clinical diagnosis
- Develop skills in ‘pattern recognition’ when interpreting an OCT scan to identify common macular conditions and differentiate from others
