Learning Objectives

  • 1. After participating in this case series analysis attendees will be able to analyse, explore and predict steps in the decision-making pathway used to establish degree of urgency, diagnosis and causation of vision threatening ocular conditions.
  • 2. Upon completion of this session participants will identify and critically evaluate imaging studies used to investigate emergent cases of vision loss.
  • 3. At the conclusion of this program attendees will be able to interpret laboratory test results used to establish definitive critical care pathways for vision threatening eye disease.
  • 4. This case series will demonstrate issues to consider in the investigation and management of red eye cases.
  • 5. Appreciate the importance of correctly assessing every patient for a relative afferent pupil defect.
  • 6. Understand the clinical differences between typical optic neuritis, anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy and optic nerve sheath meningioma.
  • 7. Understand that not every patient with an ipsilateral ptosis and miosis has Horner’s syndrome.
