Activity Outline

ACBO is thrilled to announce a Masterclass with Dr Glen "Bubba" Steele, Emeritus Professor of the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis Tennessee, on the 16th and 17th of November at the Sydney Central Hotel in Haymarket, Sydney

Do not miss this opportunity to learn from one of the global leaders in Optometry.

In 12 hours of masterclass including 4 interactive workshops, Bubba will provide valuable practical clinical insights on:

* Infant, toddler and child development
* Just Look Retinoscopy
* Active vs passive (screen use) development
* Numerous case studies, including alternating esotropia, binocular high hyperopia, exotropia, intermittent exotropia
* Effect of visual stress on attention
* Development of central and peripheral vision
* Recommendations for fixation targets, and lenses
* Recommendations for device use management
* Prescribing plus lenses
* Early visual guidance and rehabilitation

Learning Objectives

  • 1.1 Upon completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Explain the links between vision and development 2 Express the role of vision as the leader, instigator, and influencer of action and engagement 3 Discuss the necessity for early intervention as crucial to protecting a child’s visual development
  • 1.2.1 Upon completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Recall the responsibility of optometrists to determine whether a child has the necessary visual development to engage in tasks they encounter every day 2 Characterise the potential for poor visual development affecting educational, social and health challenges.
  • 1.2.2 Discuss the evidence that by six months vision has assumed the position as a dominant sense and forms the basis of later perceptual, cognitive, and social development.
  • 1.3 Upon completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Restate the connections between nearpoint visual abilities and nearpoint visual tasks of the classroom 2 Review the connections in early development of accommodation, binocular vision and eye movements. 3 Explain the benefits of Just Look Retinoscopy in assessment of visual attention, effort and processing
  • 1.4 On completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 1 Employ lenses to change the manner in which the patient can alter the looking process. 2 Appraise the retinoscopic reflex patterns, and changes as the person begins the process of observation and identification of a target 3 Differentiate the retinoscopic reflex pattern as the person loses attention
  • 1.5 On completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 1 Recognise the differences in retinoscopic reflex qualities between looking vs touching the target 2 Describe the differences in retinoscopic reflex qualities with low power + and – lenses 3 Explain the differences in retinoscopic reflex qualities when the person looks away and then back to the target
  • 1.6 On completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Explain large pupils during retinoscopy in children with heavy screen use 2 Express observations of reduced changes in reflex with retinoscopy compared to direct pupil reflex assessment. 3 Review differences in retinoscopic reflexes related to accommodation
  • 2.1 On completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1. Establish when large pupils are generally associated with focus or defocus. 2 Identify when large pupils are related to heavy gaming and social media use. 3 Recall associations between large pupils and persistent sympathetic responses
  • 2.2 On completion of this Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Illustrate retinoscopic reflexes and other visual factors in a child diagnosed with Delayed Visual Maturation 2 Express retinoscopic reflex results in alternating esotropia, and binocular high hyperopia 3 Review differences in retinoscopic reflexes in exotropia and intermittent exotropia
  • 2.3 On completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 1 Recognise changes in pupil size with an approaching target 2 Identify changes in retinoscopic reflex motion with an approaching target 3 Report changes in retinoscopic reflex brightness with an approaching target
  • 2.4 On completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 1 Recognise differences in Just Look retinoscopic reflexes of the right and left eyes initially, are they alike or different. 2 Characterise retinoscopic reflexes in different meridians as they attempt to engage 3 Illustrate observations of retinoscopic reflexes during eye movements
  • 2.5 On completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 1 Name the possible targets for younger and older children for Just Look retinoscopy 2 Reproduce the testing protocol 3 Operate the use of +/-2.00 flippers with Just Look retinoscopy
  • 2.6.1 On completion of the Presentation participants will be able to: 1 Illustrate how children with 8-10 mm pupils that respond to light but do not respond to accommodation testing suggests the need to consider device use management 2 Review how in a child showing -1.00 at distance and +0.50 at near indicates difficulty releasing vision to far and a pattern of myopia development, and a need to prescribe for near vision as well as prescribe for far vision
  • 2.6.2 On completion of the Presentation participants will be able to: 3. Dramatise how using lenses to improve the retinoscopic reflex to the ideal is the first option in visual management strategies.
