Activity Outline
Emergency eye care requires swift action to prevent vision loss, and optometrists play a crucial role in ensuring timely access to treatment. This presentation will outline common ocular emergencies encountered in practice, emphasising rapid assessment and appropriate referral procedures. We'll examine case studies highlighting the importance of recognising "red flags" and expediting care for conditions like retinal detachment, acute glaucoma, and corneal ulcers. By optimising patient triage and inter-professional communication, optometrists can significantly improve outcomes in ocular emergencies.
Learning Objectives
- Identify common ocular emergencies, including retinal detachment, acute angle-closure glaucoma, corneal ulcers, chemical burns, and neuro-ophthalmic emergencies, trauma, based on presenting signs and symptoms
- Describe the appropriate immediate management strategies for each type of ocular emergency, including first aid and necessary steps to expedite referral
- Explain the optometrist's role in coordinating care with other healthcare professionals, such as ophthalmologists and emergency room physicians, to ensure timely and effective treatment for patients experiencing an ocular emergency
