Learning Objectives

  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.1.1Recall the relative complexities and sequence of optometric assessment of visual and ocular consequences of ABI. 1.1.2Illustrate the possible difficulties and associated adaptations of examining a patient with ABI. 1.1.3Explain the sequence and variations in results of pupil reaction assessments in examination of a patient with ABI.
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.2.1Demonstrate optometric clinical assessment of cranial nerves V and VII 1 2.2Operate assessment of extraocular muscle function of cranial nerves IV and VI 1.2.3 Recognise the signs and symptoms of a cranial nerve III palsy

  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.5.1Compare the principles of static and kinetic perimetry, and the implications for vision function 1.5.2Recall the Australian fitness to drive standards regarding visual field loss 3 1.5.3Relate macula splitting and sparing to visual function
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.6.1Demonstrate H pattern assessment of ocular motility 1.6.2Implement vertical prism bar measure of suppression zone, and calculation of vertical prism 1.6.3 Operate the 9Gaze App for clinical recording of binocular vision function
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.7.1Perform different aspects of visual field assessment including single and doubkle confrontation, Riddoch assessment, and macula sparing vs splitting 1.7.2role play cranial nerve assessment of CN IV and VI
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.8.1Reproduce the NSUCO Maples-Ficklin pursuit and saccadic eye movement assessment and grading protocol 1.8.2Differentiate the range of eye movement abnormalities commonly resulting from acquired brain injury 1.8.3Explain the significance of supranuclear eye movement issues
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.9.1Recall the different features of the range of Parkinsonian conditions 1.9.2Restate the early symptoms of Parkinsons disease in activities of daily living 1.9.3Report the common visual symptoms and signs of Parkinsonian conditions
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.10.1Recall the possible aetiologies of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) 1.10.2Review the visual and ocular issues associated with IIH 1.10.3Quote the diagnostic process and management of IIH
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.11.1Describe the typical features of post-trauma vision syndrome (PTVS) 1.11.2Explain the possible effects of PTVS on activities of daily living (ADL’s) 1.11.3Discuss the possible management strategies for PTVS
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 1.12.1Role play assessment of all aspects of eye movements 1.12.2Dramatise assessment of motion sensitivity 1.12.3Prescribe management options for visual motion sensitivity
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.1.1Explain the different types of brain tumours 2.1.2Illustrate the effects of intracranial masses on brain structure and function 2.1.3Describe the visual and ocular effects of brain tumour treatment, eg surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.2.1Explain the symptoms of photophobia and pattern glare in acquired brain injury 2.2.2Review the common associated symptoms of pattern glare 2.2.3Perform assessment of the benefits of chromatic filters for pattern glare
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.3.1Review the commonalities between for visual motion and light sensitivity 2.3.2express the different methods for assessing light sensitivity and management options 2.3.3 explain the benefits of treatment of light and/or visual motion sensitivity to a “patient”
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.4.1Recall the differences in function of the brain lobes 2.4.2Review the possible effects of ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke on the occipital lobe 2.4.3Discuss the effects of rapid treatment of stroke on possible recovery of affected vision.

  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.8.1explain the basic principles of vision therapy for cranial nerve palsy IV 2.8.2express the basic principles of vision therapy for cranial nerve palsy VI 2.8.3repeat options for loading cranial nerve palsy vision therapy activities
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.9.1demonstrate vision therapy activities for vertical binocular deviations 2.9.2perform demonstrate vision therapy activities for horizontal binocular deviations 2.9.3employ loading options on binocular misalignment VT activities
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.10.1Describe different methods for reporting assessment and management of optometric care of patients with acquired brain injury 2.10.2Characterise the different agencies involved in funding and care of patients with ABI 2.10.3explain optometric interaction with other practitioners involved in the care of people with ABI
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.11.1explain the potential issues of anxiety and depression in patients with ABI, and how they may affect assessment and treatment 2.11.2recall the classes of medications which patients may be using as a result of ABI 2.11.3report the importance of optimizing sleep in rehabilitation of ABI
  • At the completion of the CPD activity, participants should be able to: 2.12.1repeat the basic principles of optometric phototherapy 2.12.2express the options for delivering optometric phototherapy in office and at home 2.12.3operate optometric phototherapy instruments and different filters
