Activity Outline

North Queensland Optometry and Allied Health Seminar is a full day of innovated learning with a focus on the advances in management of eye health. 

Dr Brett Drury will be delivering two presentations, Beyond Transplantation for Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy and Glaucoma Plumbing – When and How

Dr Michael Hogden will be presenting on understanding macular holes and pucker.

Dr Thomas Campbell will be presenting on the advances in cataract surgery.

Dr Matthew Cranstoun will be presenting on understanding age-related periocular and facial changes and the interventions available to improve them.

Dr Todd Goodwin will be presenting on the best IOL on the market. 

There will be a trade area with our valued sponsors who will be able to give updates on new products and technology


Learning Objectives

  • a. Understand the pathophysiology of FED b. Understand and clinically identify the corneal transplantation options for FED c. Recognise the mechanism of action of Ripasudil on cells within the human body d. Appreciate the effect of Ripasudil on the cornea e. Understand the mechanism of IOP lowering from Ripasudil
  • a. Identify the decision points in a patient’s journey with glaucoma where surgery would be indicated b. Gain understanding of the spectrum of surgical options and their respective levels of efficacy c. Recognise common surgical procedures in patients
  • a. Understand the epidemiology and risk factors for idiopathic full thickness macular holes. b. Describe the clinical and imaging features of a full thickness macula hole. c. Know common causes of macula pucker/macula epiretinal membranes. d. Describe common treatments used to manage macular holes and macular pucker.
  • Articulate why its important to use modern IOL formulas, why corneal tomography and biometry are so critical.
  • Have an in depth understanding of the pathological changes that occur in the face and periocular tissues with normal ageing. This will include an understanding of the clinical features, common symptoms and presenting complaints and finally an overview of their surgical and non surgical management.
  • Better understand the patient experience with cataract surgery and how it may differ from one IOL to another.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to meet with suppliers and gain knowledge from their trade stall, they will have products to sample and discussions on the advances in technology
