Learning Objectives

  • Appropriately recognize ophthalmic surgical emergencies
  • Perform initial assessment and provide relevant information when referring common surgical ophthalmic emergencies
  • Understand the different urgency of referral for various emergency conditions
  • Understand which conditions require immediate referrals
  • Initiate necessary pharmacological treatment where deemed appropriate
  • Differentiate the difference between public care vs. private care and what this means for the patient
  • Refer patients appropriately to either public emergency or private room based on clinical criteria and patient factors
  • Gain in depth understanding of how patients are managed once referred onward for definitive surgical management
  • Provide patient with pre-operative advice to facilitate transfer of care
  • Inform patients on the process and realistic expectations of emergency surgery
  • Facilitate safe handover of patients as one health professional to another
  • Reinforce knowledge of surgical processes
  • Understand patient journey on the day of an emergency eye surgery through a tour of private eye hospital
