Activity Outline

The OKKO Masterclass 360 Program is a full-day event held on Sunday 24th March, 2024. It will feature engaging face-to-face presentations with significant time allocated for speaker-to-audience discussion and interaction. Keynote Speakers include Dr Matthew Russell, Dr Nick Toalster, Dr Judy Ku, Dr Inez Hsing, Dr Sean Cheng, Dr Phillipa Sharwood and Dr Christopher Stewart. Glaucoma Australia and Eyebank Australia will also give a foundation update.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify benign eyelid lesions
  • Identify malignant or suspicious eyelid lesions
  • Identify common subtle signs a lesion may be malignant
  • Have an understanding of referral timeframes for benign and malignant eyelid lesions
  • Have an awareness of different eyelid reconstructive techniques and what these may look like when presenting post repair and any associated issues patients may notice.
  • Recognise common causes of keratitis
  • Review management of typical keratitis
  • Learn to recognise atypical infectious keratitis
  • Briefly review how management of atypical keratitis differs from typical
  • Identify non-infectious keratopathies
  • Briefly discuss treatment of keratopathies
  • Identify patients that would benefit from improving their strabismus
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of the various conservative and surgical management options
  • Tips on successful use of prism
  • Understand what strabismus surgery entails for patients
  • Recognise commonly encountered vitreoretinal surgical emergencies and their red flags to look out for during optometric assessment
  • Gain insight into urgency of referral, including ‘where to’ and ‘how to’ refer these patients for definitive care in a timely manner
  • Understand different types of anaesthesia used for vitreoretinal surgery
  • Become familiar with key steps in vitreoretinal surgery and their rationales
  • Understand the patient journey in post-operative recovery along with appropriate outcome expectations (1 day, 2 weeks, 6 weeks), including activities such as working, driving, exercising, flying and when to update their glasses
  • Understand ocular medication regimens following vitreoretinal surgery, as well as the importance of compliance and keeping follow-up appointments
  • Recognising and understand when to refer back when coming across post-operative complications
  • Understand the pathogenesis of AMD and to differentiate it from other macular disease on clinical imaging
  • See the role of optometry in managing and providing collaborative care to patients with AMD
  • Recognise the current and potential future treatments for AMD
  • Understand common pre-operative and post-operative conditions that may impact the visual and refractive outcomes following cataract surgery
  • Understand how patient refractive aspirations and ocular health issues influence IOL selection
  • Understand the role of IOL exchange, piggyback IOL insertion, & laser vision correction following cataract surgery
  • Outline the advances in lenticular extraction surgery (SmartSight & SMILE)
  • Understand the role of Intraocular Collamer Lens (ICLs) and EDOF ICLs in managing refractive errors - indication, benefits, limitations and complications.
  • Clarify the role of LASIK, PRK and PTK in modern refractive surgery
  • Be exposed to a range of common and less common anterior segment cases
  • Compare and contrast various approaches to clinical scenarios
  • Understand those management strategies that are standard, best practice
  • Understand the lifecycle of donation, retrieval, transplantation
  • Recognize the range of tissues type which can be transplanted
  • Gain an understanding of the process involved in tissue retrieval and preparation
  • Be able to begin conversation with patients and their family about tissue donation
  • Be informed for the new Sightwise platform (Glaucoma Australia) and the support it can offer glaucoma patients referred by optometrists who end up on public hospital waiting lists
  • To provide the latest research and clinical finding established by Glaucoma Australia
  • To review the role and scope of Glaucoma Australia in supporting patients and eye care practioners
  • Understanding of principles of IOL selection in glaucoma patients undergoing cataract surgery
  • Recognize that management of pterygium in glaucoma patients requires special care in order to avoid future complications
  • Understand the increasing role of interventional glaucoma surgeries and the algorithm of patient selection of each procedure
  • Discuss how management of glaucoma patients with co-existing ocular surface disease can differ from conventional medical therapy
  • Understand the benefits and role of immunomodulators (e.g topical cyclosporine) in glaucoma patients.
  • Take a deeper delve into the latest diagnostic challenges, clinical diagnostic work up and diagnostic devices and therapeutic/medical, laser and surgical management of current clinical topics topics and controversies in cataract,/refractive, glaucoma, complex anterior segment, macula and vitreoretinal disease.
