Optometry Connection - March 2021


Learning Objectives

  • Understand the pathophysiology and limitations to current technology for myopic glaucoma
  • Understand the importance of gonioscopy in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and other ocular conditions
  • Become more familiar with the constantly evolving treatment paradigm for glaucoma and the role of optometric management/co-management of the condition, including aspects relating to glaucoma surgery
  • Obtain an overview of Optometry Australia's updated Glaucoma Clinical Practice Guidelines, with particular emphasis on the major differences to the previous version developed in 2016
  • Develop a better understanding of the risk factors associated with glaucoma
  • Develop a better understanding of the processes involved in the optimisation of spectacle lens manufacture and the compensatory mechanisms employed to counteract undesirable outcomes
  • Become more familiar with inherited retinal dystrophies and the role of gene therapies (such as LUXTURNA) in the treatment and therapeutic management of these conditions
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of referral "quality" in relation to glaucoma management within the public hospital system has and methods to improve the quality of such referrals and referrals in general
  • Become more familiar with the prevalence and seasonal variation of Acanthamoeba in Australian domestic tap water
  • Develop an understanding of the systemic risk factors of normal tension glaucoma and how these can be managed in order to improve prognosis of the condition
  • Become more familiar with the features and benefits of ultra widefield retinal scanning and how these can play an important role in clinical practice
  • Develop a structured clinical approach to the evaluation of pupil anisocoria, with the aid of diagnostic therapeutic agents
  • Develop a better understanding of cotton wool spots, the signs and symptoms that they can induce, along with their presence being an indicator of vascular insufficiency
