Activity Outline

The educational evening will consist of separate sessions. 

Session 1: (Understanding IOL’s)  The first subject on the talk is a review of results of Alcon Vivity AcrySof and Clareon lenses in terms of unaided visual acuity and unaided comfortable reading ability without spectacles and a comparison of results to the predicted outcome based on the Barrett Universal Formula and mean average error, as well as review of patients’ satisfaction with the lens and issues with side effects such as glare. 

Session 2 (Case Study)  The second part of the talk is a discussion on ocular toxoplasmosis and the potential dangers of using steroids in medicine. This includes understanding the life cycle of the toxoplasma parasite, the differences between microorganisms such as prions, viruses, bacteria and parasites and understanding the risks of using topical and systemic steroids in patient care.

Session 3: (Ethics) The final part of the talk is review of a patient with a very undesirable clinical care path and the issues arising in ethical patient treatment in Optometry and Ophthalmology.

  • Understand the principle of optics of EDOF lenses and understand the difference between Alcon AcrySof and Clareon lenses
  • Understand ocular toxoplasmosis and the differential diagnosis
  • Understand the risks of using topical and systemic steroids in treating patients
  • Understand patient-centred care and ethical treatment
