Activity Outline


Part 1: "Mind the Gap” -Understanding Macular Holes - Dr James Sax

This session will be a 60-minute face to face presentation by Dr James Sax, Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon. He will explore different types and classification of macular holes, the causes and mechanisms behind their formation, and the management strategies for treating them. He will also discuss the outcomes and potential complications associated with macular hole repair. At the end of the presentation, there will be 10 multiple choice questions. 

 Part 2: “Waterworks and Plumbing”- Assessment of the watery eye -Dr Katie Chen

This session will be a 60-minute face to face presentation by consultant ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon, Dr Katie Chen. The topic of watery eyes will be covered in depth including the anatomy and physiology of the lacrimal system (both production and drainage), history taking and assessment of common presenting clinical pictures and complaints, how to approach and manage the most likely differential diagnosis, and when to refer for further investigations/surgery. The presentation will include real time live polling throughout to keep the participants involved and interested.  At the end of the presentation, there will be 10 multiple choice questions. 

 Part 3: Lacrimal Lavage Workshop

The presentation will be followed by a further interactive workshop where the lacrimal lavage technique will be demonstrated. The participants will then break into pairs or threes and have the opportunity to perform a lavage on each other should they choose. The necessary equipment will be provided, and all attendees will be encouraged to participate.


Learning Objectives

  • Identify the key types of macular holes
  • Appreciate macular hole classification based on OCT features
  • Gain a basic understanding of surgery for macular holes
  • Have an understanding of patient outcomes in successful macular hole surgery
  • Have a systematic approach to the assessment of a patient with watering eye/s
  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of tear production and drainage; and how an imbalance of this will lead to symptoms
  • Develop a list of differential diagnosis from directed history taking and examination
  • Develop an appropriate management plan according to differential diagnosis including the use of conservative measures, and an understanding of surgical options available
  • Be comfortable with performing a lacrimal lavage/irrigation
  • Confidently identity those patients that require surgical intervention/referral for further assessment
