Learning Objectives

  • Elaborate on what is meant by a ‘full thickness macular hole (FTMH)' and briefly discuss the understood pathogenesis with relation to the microanatomy of the macula
  • Understand the signs and symptoms of FTMH
  • Describe the causes of FTMH
  • Be able to identify the important OCT features of FTMH with relation to severity, staging and prognosis for operative success
  • Understand the risk to fellow eyes
  • Understand the management options of FTMH
  • Know when to refer to an ophthalmologist
  • Understand importance of a preoperative consent discussion and setting patient expectations.
  • Have a brief understanding of the surgery required to fix FTMH including primary and recurrent/persistent holes
  • Have had the opportunity to observe some surgical videos of primary and secondary FTMH repairs.
  • Have had the opportunity to discuss 20 rapid-fire, real cases of FTMH patients
  • Elaborate on what is meant by a ‘epiretinal membrane' and briefly discuss the understood pathogenesis with relation to the microanatomy of the macula
  • Understand the signs and symptoms of epiretinal membrane
  • Describe the causes of epiretinal membrane
  • Be able to identify the important OCT features of epiretinal membranes with relation to severity, staging and prognosis for operative success
  • Have an understanding of the Govetto Staging system for epiretinal membranes
  • Know when to refer to an ophthalmologist
  • Understand importance of a preoperative consent discussion and setting patient expectations.
  • Have a brief understanding of the surgery required to peel epiretinal membranes
  • Have had the opportunity to observe a surgical video of epiretinal membrane peeling.
  • Have had the opportunity to discuss 15 rapid-fire, real cases of epiretinal membrane patients.
