Activity Outline

The glaucoma patient who presents with a red eye presents a diagnostic challenge. Patients are often anxious as they are aware that glaucoma can lead to vision loss, so the presence of a red eye alerts them to these concerns. There are many possible aetiologies, with some of a chronic nature and others requiring urgent management to reduce the risk of permanent damage. This article will address the causes of red eye specifically in relation to glaucoma. There are many other causes of red eye that may occur coincidently, however not related to glaucoma and therefore beyond the scope of this article.

Learning Objectives

  • Diagnose the common causes of red eyes in glaucoma, based on the history and eye examination
  • Identify patients who require urgent referral for ophthalmic management of potentially vision threatening conditions
  • Analyse which medications are causing allergy or sensitivity and know the appropriate steps in the management
