Presentation 1 (6:30-7:00pm): From A to T: Understanding genetic testing for retinal diseases. - Dr Alexis Ceecee Britten-Jones

Presentation 2 (7:00-7:30pm): The do’s and don’ts of preclinical retinal viral-based gene therapy - Dr Livia Carvalho

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the genetic basis of both rare inherited retinal diseases and more common retinal condition (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and recognise the differences in genetic testing strategies for these conditions
  • Describe local referral pathways for directing patients to ocular genetics services, including important factors to consider for diagnosis and referral
  • Describe the latest research on the diagnosis and treatment of inherited retinal diseases and communicate with patients about how these advancements could impact their clinical care
  • Understand the basic principles of what makes a specific ocular condition ideal for gene therapy
  • Understand what is a viral vector and it can be used to treat ocular conditions
  • Develop an awareness of what preclinical testing is required when testing a novel gene therapy for inherited retinal diseases
  • Develop an awareness of what types of clinical trials are currently underway for inherited retinal diseases
