Learning Objectives

  • To review the ways data-led interventions are improving optometry workforce delivery of eyecare
  • To explore evidence-based optometry interventions that support lowering avoidable blindness rates
  • To understand the importance of national screening programs in enabling optometry to improve patient outcomes in future
  • To review clinical presentations of common paediatric conditions
  • To review diagnostic workup of these conditions, and understand what can and can't be easily done in a standard optometric clinic
  • To understand the place of optometric management of refractive and oculomotor paediatric conditions
  • To review diagnosis of glaucoma and when to treat, and the appropriate modalities and first line therapies.

  • To consider appropriate follow-up and review periods for vitreoretinal conditions
  • To be able to accurately assess and diagnose dry eye severity
  • To review the available therapeutic treatment options for contact lens keratitis
  • To understand refractive surgery options and suitability criteria and exclusion criteria
  • To review and understand the principles of diabetic retinopathy screening programs
  • To gain insight into the United Kingdom's successful approach to screening for diabetic retinopathy
  • To understand what elements of the UK approach could be translated to Australian practice, and the impact this could have on avoidable blindness in Australia
  • To understand the current and projected healthcare burden caused by diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
  • To consider the role of optometry in a system-wide healthcare approach to reducing the burden caused by diabetes
  • To recognise the benefits of a multi-disciplinary monitoring and recall system (KeepSight) in preventing avoidable blindness
  • To review the RANZCO referral pathways for glaucoma
  • To further investigate co-management of glaucoma between ophthalmologists and optometrists
  • To understand the benefit of specialist –led training in creating and strengthening referral and co- management networks
  • To review the pathophysiology of pigmented ocular lesions
  • To be able to assess pigmented ocular lesions and develop differential diagnoses
  • To understand referral criteria and urgencies for pigmented lesions
  • To be able to recognise characteristic OCT findings in Diabetes & AMD
  • To review classification and grading of diabetic retinopathy and AMD
  • To understand and be able to follow the RANZCO referral pathways for AMD and diabetic retinopathy
  • To understand presenting signs of ocular inflammation
  • To review the use of ocular therapeutics in treating anterior inflammatory conditions
  • To gain insight into the current best practice for managing acute inflammation
  • To understand the support needs of patients – what patients want and need
  • To understand the principles of collective impact for better patient outcomes
  • To explore technology as an enabler of greater collaboration and partnership between Specsavers optometrists and MDFA
  • Understand the low vision and blind services available to patients with vision impairment and blindness and be able to discuss these options with patients
  • Appreciate how low vision technology is applied based on a patients individual needs
  • Know when your vision impaired and blind patients need to be referred for specialised services
  • To understand collaborative optometric management and therapeutics for glaucoma
  • To identify the impact of Specsaver Optometrists driving the newly diagnosed glaucoma patients towards Glaucoma Australia using Oculo at the earliest convenience
  • Key messages Glaucoma Australia promotes to those with glaucoma, their families and the general community
  • To provide up to date data regarding current and forecast trends in diabetes
  • To provide an overview of diabetes and how it relates to eye health
