Activity Outline

Sydney Eye Surgeons is delighted to present an educational seminar on June 23rd in the Centennial Homestead. Our line-up of expert speakers includes Assoc Professor Mitchell Lawlor, Doctor's Robert McDonald, Alex Hamilton, Brighu Swamy, Dov Hersh, John Leaney, Megha Kaushik and Eamonn Fahy. These highly-specialised ophthalmologists bring a wealth of experience and expertise in all areas of ophthalmology which provides an excellent opportunity for optometrists to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Our seminar will provide an engaging experience, featuring both presentations and interactive discussions that invite attendees to actively participate. Six sessions have been carefully crafted to deliver an enriching experience for all in attendance. It will provide an opportunity to immerse one's self in the expertise of our specialists, each with their own area of expertise across multiple disciplines of ophthalmology.

Learning Objectives

  • Accurately identify neurological abnormalities during ocular assessments
  • Distinguish the characteristics and symptoms of common ocular neurological disorders
  • Confident with selecting tests and accurately executing testing techniques for neurological disorders
  • Develop and correctly apply condition dependent treatment and management
  • Determine when to refer patients for extra ophthalmology and or specialist care
  • Gain an understanding of ophthalmological treatment and management
  • Confidently identify corneal abnormalities during anterior segment assessments
  • Accurately assess and detect signs of common corneal conditions during testing and evaluations
  • Confidently diagnose and categorise common corneal conditions and injuries
  • Confidently grade severity of corneal abnormalities during anterior segment assessments
  • Confidently manage corneal diseases and injuries
  • Determine when corneal patient monitoring is appropriate or when referral to a specialist is necessary
  • Address urgent corneal clinical concerns in a timely manner
  • Develop effective treatment plans for common anterior segment eye conditions
  • Select and advise appropriate medications for anterior segment abnormalities
  • Provide patients with knowledgeable guidance on using prescription and non-prescription topical medications for anterior segment issues
  • Confidently identify and classify retinal conditions during testing
  • Confidently recognise retinal emergencies
  • Develop timely and appropriate management plans for retinal emergencies
  • Create a personalised plan for managing patients with retinal conditions
  • Recognise and disregard unreliable and inaccurate test results to aid patient diagnosis
  • Understand and identify common retinal abnormalities using OCT and fundal photography
  • Confidently identify OCT artefacts
  • Confidently assess and monitor patients' retinal conditions and test results including visual outcomes
  • Provide patients with knowledgeable information on identifying signs and managing retinal emergencies
  • Confidently identify glaucomatous clinical signs
  • Select correct diagnostic testing and accurately perform diagnostic testing for glaucoma
  • Accurately interpret and understand diagnostic test results for glaucoma
  • Confidently classify and distinguish different types of glaucoma
  • Utilise various techniques for using the slit lamp during patient evaluations
  • Distinguish normal from abnormal results in optic nerve OCT imaging
  • Confidently assess and utilise OCT imaging to aid Glaucoma diagnosis
  • Identify inaccurate OCT imaging and understand limitations
  • Create personalised management plans for patients with Glaucoma
  • Provide glaucoma patients with accurate instructions on medication dosage and usage
  • Implement techniques to improve the accuracy of visual field assessments
  • Confidently distinguish non-glaucomatous conditions that mimic glaucoma
  • Confidently assess and identify features of eyelid lesions
  • Accurately recognise and classify types of eyelid lesions
  • Distinguish differentiating features of malignant eyelid lesions
  • Confidently identify and diagnose limbal lesions of the eye
  • Provide expert guidance to patients on the appropriate use of topical medications for eyelid lesions
  • Develop a timely and appropriate management for benign and malignant eyelid lesions
  • Create a patient-centred treatment plan for patients with eyelid lesions
  • Understand and advise on surgical options for patients with eyelid lesions
  • Confidently deliver and communicate sensitive information to patients during consultations
  • Understand and implement gold standard testing for ocular conditions when possible
  • Create personalised managements plans for patients
  • Implement methods to improve the quality of OCT and fundal photographs
