Learning Objectives
- Understand the appropriate context and use of oral medications in optometry
- Understand the appropriate prescribing considerations of these medications
- Understand the appropriate management and safety profile of these medications
- Understanding factors that may affect the attainment of optimal cycloplegia (i.e. for cycloplegic refraction)
- Understanding the use of atropine in myopia and amblyopia management
- Understanding the role of combined therapies (i.e. atropine + orthokeratology) in myopia control
- To discuss the corneal ectasias that optometrists are likely to see in clinical practice, including keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration.
- To discuss the latest research knowledge in corneal collagen cross-linking, including the 10-year study results for paediatric keratoconus, and the meta-analysis comparisons for transepithelial versus epithelium-off techniques and standard versus accelerated techniques.
- Discuss general recommendations for optimal cataract surgery outcomes in patients with keratoconus and those who have undergone a corneal graft for the management of keratoconus.
- Discuss the epidemiology of myopia and glaucoma, and glaucoma in myopia, and how these factors interact with age as a risk factor for glaucoma.
- Discuss the challenges of glaucoma assessment in the presence of myopia
- Apply these perspectives to the analysis of a case study in an interactive format.
- Discuss recent developments in the diagnosis and management of anterior segment inflammation, including episcleritis, scleritis and anterior uveitis
- Discuss the optimal management of anterior uveitis in optometry: including frequency of pupil dilation, documentation of signs and symptoms, surveillance for systemic involvement
- Understand the indications for referral to ophthalmology for specialist care in anterior segment inflammation
Max CPD hours awarded: 6.75
