Activity Outline

Dr Jennifer Simonson presents on Visual Development - What is Normal and What is Not

Duration: 60 minutes

Synopsis: Attendees will learn tips and pearls to complete examination procedures to assess infants, toddlers, and developmentally delayed patients. This course will emphasize clinical observations and how to make age-appropriate modification of optometric testing. Testing will include preferential looking and matching tests of acuity, eye alignment and stereopsis assessments, ocular motility and health evaluation techniques. This course will discuss normal visual development and how clinical observations aid in identifying delays and disorders. Short Description: Attendees will learn tips and techniques to complete infant and toddler vision examinations and assess normal and delayed visual development.

Learning Objectives

  • Conduct a comprehensive case history for young pediatric patients
  • Assess binocularity development using stereopsis testing, prism, Hirschberg, Bruckner, and Krimsky tests
  • Evaluate ocular motility and document neuromuscular conditions that limit eye movement accuracy and ability
  • Utilize preferential looking and symbol matching tests to assess visual acuity in non-verbal patients
  • Assess ocular health on infants and young children
  • Record significant clinical observations of visual function
