Activity Outline
The experience of new flashes and floaters is a complaint commonly seen in optometric and ophthalmological practice. While many of these patients will simply be experiencing a symptomatic posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), a minority will have vision-threatening pathology. As Dr Mitchell Lee and Dr Rahul Dubey write, knowing the symptoms, signs, and red flags of these more serious issues will help you ensure optimal outcomes for your patients.
Learning Objectives
- Be aware of the signs and symptoms of a PVD and know when to refer
- Understand that a minority of cases will have vision threatening pathology
- Be aware of the rare causes of PVD that include uveitis, infection and choroidal masses
