Board of Directors

We are managed by a Board of Directors elected from our membership. Where additional expertise is required to support strategy and governance the board seeks out and nominates up to two specific individuals to join the board.

The board is structured in such a way as to ensure that all sectors of the profession are suitably represented from early to mid-career, transitioning to retirement, large group corporate optometry to private practitioners, and locums. The Board of Directors meet monthly and our AGM takes place around October each year.

The 2024 OWA AGM took place on Wednesday 16th October. Long time board member, Gary Crerie stepped down from the board after 40+ years and Andrew Nguyen also stepped down. Ben Gilbert and Lynne Allard join the OWA Board as Directors. The full OWA Board Members line up is shown below. Any questions regarding future involvement with the OWA Board, please email OWA CEO, Evan MacRae on eo@optometrywa.org.au

Mrs Michelle Bell - BSc(Optom), GradCertOcTher
Born and raised in Perth, I moved to Melbourne to studied Optometry at the University of Melbourne, moving back to Perth on graduation in 1991. After working with Laubman and Pank for 22 years, I opened my own practice in Joondalup with Options Optometrists in 2013. In 2012 I upgraded my qualifications by completed a Grad Cert in Ocular Therapeutics with UNSW. In 2019 I joined the Optometry WA board as a director and am currently part of the Remuneration and Governance sub-committee.

I love my work as an optometrist as it allows me the opportunity to build relationships with my clients and offer solutions for their vision that improve their quality of life. I find all aspects of optometry enjoyable but particularly enjoy working with children and the challenges of fitting specially contact lenses. Playing music has always been a passion and have played flute with the WA Fire and Emergency Services Concert Band for the past 33 years! I also love to get away and relax on holiday in the caravan with my husband and dogs.

Ms Ella Goh - BVisSci MOptom

My name is Ella Goh and I am the optometrist director at Oscar Wylee Galleria. It has been a challenging but rewarding journey being the partner in an optometry practice. With the changing landscape of optometry scope in Australia, I am looking forward to building a collaborative work environment and mentoring future optometrists. I transferred my membership to OWA after moving from Brisbane, QLD straight after graduating in 2016. Joining the Early Career Optometrist WA committee in April 2020 and then as a board member for OWA in November 2021 has been a truly eye-opening experience and provided amazing opportunities like writing an article for GenWest Careers, the online companion for The West Australian. Outside of work, I love cooking and trying new eateries, and hitting small things very fast (playing badminton and squash).

Mr Ben Gilbert - B App Sc (Optometry), Grad Cert Ocular Therapeutics

I moved to Perth immediately after graduating from QUT in 2001, eventually becoming a franchise partner with Laubman and Pank in Rockingham in 2014. This has given me an insight into the challenges of maintaining an optometric practice, and I am excited about the opportunity to advocate for the profession as a new Optometry Western Australia board member.

In 2012 I completed my Ocular Therapeutics qualification. Over the years I have been involved in volunteer work in Tanzania, Vietnam and the Northern Territory, and more recently at St Pat's in Fremantle.
Outside of work I fill my time with running, golf, watching live music, following the Hawthorn football club and caravanning with my wife and three daughters.

Outside of optometry I’m an avid foodie and have taken up running to bring some balance. My goal is to run a half marathon this year

In my time on the OWA board was treasurer, editor of monthly newsletter, President, National Director. Sometimes concurrently.

Most pleased about running the association for ourselves and using the money saved from not paying Chartered accountants to run the association- (and including building donors -myself, Peter Bell (PP), Paul Levi (PP), Stephen Bowes, Gavin Smyth, Julie Lourie, Don Ezekiel, Martin Curtis, Marilyn Stern, Grant Nicholas and John Hogan) to buy our own premises for monthly member meetings and office space. We had no paid staff and an all-volunteer board.

Pleased with OWA response to the early strategic and sovereign risk posed by corporatisation of the profession in the early 80’s that led to formation of AIO (ProVision).
.
Also proud of OWA role in delivering optometric care to Rural and remote areas. In 2001 I started project to get Optometric care out to regions and indigenous areas in all parts of the state. Met with many Aboriginal people, committees and organisations to assess need and opportunities to assist. We identified areas of need as indicated by the indigenous and regional population and found the great work being done by Margie O’Neill Optometrist (with tremendous support from Helen Wright who still coordinates the programme which is no longer an OWA project but incorporated into Lions Outback Vision)- we tailored her programme to ensure long term viability of Margie’s area of cover (when she no longer could be involved) with a view to expanding as expertise grows. Initially we had 12 optometrists committed to providing the service in Kimberley and Pilbara plus isolated other areas. We organized for OWA to provide Cultural Training via Curtin Uni, first aid and 4 WD Training to participants.

I worked in ACCHO’s (AMS) in Kununurra, Halls Creek, Yilli, Warmen and Wyndham
