CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) in partnership with Optometry Australia have established a network of optometrists who have the credentials to conduct vision and eye examinations for Australian pilots.
It is a statutory requirement that Credentialed optometrists (COs) complete a 'REFRESHER' course in aviation optometry at a minimum of every 4 years. A refresher course is intended to bring existing COs up to speed with changes in exam procedures and upkeep competency in aviation eye exams. There are approximately 45 optometrists who are due for this refresher course.
In March 2019, Optometry Australia is delivering this course online ( for the first time) via videos and online assessment questions. We have listened to feedback from previous years, highlighting to us that face-to-face conference attendance interstate is challenging and costly for some. It will entail watching 4 hours of video footage ( via unlisted links on OA's Youtube channel), followed by 40 online multiple-choice assessment questions, hosted online.
Video content was recorded during our full course for new COs, held in Melbourne Nov 2018.
Clinical (non-therapeutic) independent learning content: (4 hours) = 8 points
Approximate number of optometrists: 45
