Activity Outline

Contact Lenses for Kids is a three hour, comprehensive learning journey to increase knowledge, confidence and management skills in paediatric contact lens practice. It is specifically designed to increase confidence in fitting children (aged 12 and under) with contact lenses, providing the theoretical knowledge and practical tools to understand how successful, satisfied and safe children can be as contact lens wearers, especially in comparison to teens and adults. With a strong evidence base of 80+ scientific references, this course explains the multitude of reasons that children can thrive in contact lens wear, and how to ensure clinical communication and practice processes are set up for success.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the benefits of contact lenses (CLs) for kids beyond simple correction of ametropia
  • Determine new opportunities to prescribe CLs for young patients based on a variety of clinical presentations
  • Outline the evidence base on CL safety in children, including how to communicate this to parents and patients
  • Determine clinical processes and management pathways to ensure safety
  • Discuss research evidence of successful adoption of CL wear in children – in time, cost, compliance and management arenas
  • Appraise practical aspects of ensuring successful CL discussions including patient and parent communication themes
  • Discuss a variety of patient-specific and CL-specific factors which could influence CL success in children
  • Identify the implications and benefits of fitting high ametropic children with CLs from a binocular vision perspective
  • Explain the evidence base of CL complication types and frequency in children and teens
  • Appraise other factors which could influence CL comfort and acceptance; including dry eye frequency, systemic medications, screen time, binocular vision and ocular allergies
  • Describe clinical and practice logistical factors which support successful long-term paediatric CL wear
  • Assemble and utilize resources available to support the practice staff team and to educate parents and patients on successful CL wear in children and teens.
