Topic: Enhancing focus and improving lives: Practical management of keratoconus
Speakers: Alissa Maillet & Larry Kornhauser
This session will cover practical management strategies for keratoconus, beyond traditional corneal gas permeable contact lenses. We will explore scleral and hybrid contact lens fitting using corneal topography, scleral profiling and anterior optical coherence tomography (OCT), referrals for corneal crosslinking, and management of co-existing factors. Case studies will be used to illustrate management effectiveness, patient impact, and appropriate review schedules.

Meet your speakers:
Alissa Maillet |
Alissa Maillet is a Lecturer in Optometry and Vision Science at Deakin University. Alissa graduated with a BSc from University of Waterloo, Canada in 2002 with Honours studies in the field of Biotechnology. She migrated to Australia in 2005 to study optometry at University of Melbourne, successfully gaining Bachelor of Optometry qualification with therapeutic endorsement in 2008. Alissa worked as clinical optometrist, specialising in contact lens fitting, until 2015 when she commenced work at Deakin University. Alissa has completed a graduate certificate in Higher Education Learning & Teaching, a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy, and is currently undertaking PhD studies. Alissa maintains clinical contact as a locum optometrist in the Geelong area and is one of the lead optometrists at the Deakin Collaborative Eye Care Clinic. Her research and teaching interests include dry eye disease, contact lenses, ocular therapeutics, and myopia management. |

Mr. Kornhauser is a founding member of Keratoconus Australia and has been president of the Association since its creation in 2000. Mr. Kornhauser was awarded the Order of Australia for his volunteer work in support of people with keratoconus and their families over the past 20 years and his contributions to eye research in Australia in the field of keratoconus. |
