Activity Outline

Terrace Eye Centre are hosting an education forum for Optometrists at Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane on Sunday 17 March 2024. It is our aim to work with our referring practitioners by meeting their individual requirements and providing their patients with the highest standard of care in a timely, compassionate and informed manner.

Topics will include: OCT Interpretation; PVD/Mac Hole formation; Wet AMD; OCT & Visual Fields Interpretation; Interventions; SPOT - when & what to refer; Treatments - PDT/Plaque/Enucleation; Thyroid & other myopathies; Common eyelid disorders; Common eyelid lesions; and Corneal dystrophies.

Learning Objectives

  • Interpret subtle signs on OCT scans to determine which signs indicate safe observation and which indicate the potential for vision loss and require referral
  • Determine OCT signs which help offer prognostic information
  • Identify and grade macular holes
  • State the typical clinical findings of age-related macular degeneration
  • Formulate differential diagnoses of macular conditions which may resemble age-related macular degeneration
  • Identify typical patterns of glaucomatous disease on visual fields and OCT
  • Understand the array of treatment options available for glaucomatous disease and when they might be appropriate
  • Triage referrals for keratoconus and corneal dystrophy suspects
  • Implement a better post-operative management plan of patients who have undergone anterior segment surgery
  • Identify patients with Thyroid Eye
  • Distinguish between patients with Thyroid Eye and other causes of Proptosis
  • Advise patients of treatment options for Thyroid Eye Disease
  • Identify common and uncommon (potentially life and vision threatening) eye lid malformation
  • Understand the common eyelid lesions presenting in children and adults
  • List the “red flag”/concerning findings for eyelid lesions that indicate more sinister pathology and warrant referral
  • Identify ocular surface and intraocular lesions which are suspicious and require referral
  • Outline the treatment modalities for cancers of the eye
  • Consolidate referral criteria and pathway for ocular oncology cases
  • Understand ocular oncology broad management options
  • Review outcomes for patients with ocular oncology presentations
  • Review OCT assessment of post-operative macular oedema to identify complications and requirement for referral
  • Review OCT and visual fields to compare if there are changes over time, what could cause these changes and if this is glaucoma, what treatment options are available
  • List the red flags for pellucid marginal degeneration to avoid misdiagnosis
  • Identify clinical features of a BCC on the lower eyelid and discuss management options
  • Apply the MOLES acronym to patients with suspicious choroidal lesions to determine a score, and plan for management
  • List the red flags for pellucid marginal degeneration to avoid misdiagnosis
