Activity Outline

Envision Eye Centre is a boutique ophthalmology practice located in Sydney’s CBD. Join us on Tuesday 4th Of March at Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park for an engaging and informative Optometry Event. The night will focus on the latest insights and advancements in ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmologists presenting on the night will include our director Dr John Males, Dr. Deepa Viswanathan, Dr. Alison Chiu, and Dr. Sophia Zagora. All presentations will last for 30- 45 minutes. Lectures will be presented via PowerPoint, and multiple choice questions will be included for some of the presentations to enhance further your understanding of the topics presented. There will also be the opportunity to ask and interact with the surgeons, in the 10 minutes allocated at the end of the talks.

The night will also allow networking opportunities and to build relationships with your optometry piers and with the ophthalmologists to help enhance your referral network.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand indications for DMEK (descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty)
  • Understand the DMEK procedure
  • Know how to interpret DMEK results
  • Appreciate the use of corneal imaging in DMEK
  • Understand the complications that can occur with DMEK surgery
  • Have a knowledge of what therapeutic treatments can be indicated prior to considering proceeding with a DMEK
  • Appreciate how to choose the right intraocular lens implant (IOL) for the right patient
  • Appreciate the technology of IOL choices has changed over the years
  • Appreciate why patients benefit from discussions regarding IOL choices
  • Understand what supplementary secondary IOL sulcus lenses are and how can they be used in a variety of applications, including upgrading vision after cataract surgery
  • Assess patient suitability for referral to an eye specialist
  • Have an understanding of CNV's (Choroidal neovascularization) part of the spectrum of exudative age-related macular degeneration and the latest treatments
  • Appreciate what is new in multimodal imaging
  • Have a greater understanding of diagnostic dilemmas
  • Understand what physical parameters and psychosocial factors on clinical examination and imaging are important in assessing suitability for corneal laser vision correction
  • Understand which corneal laser procedures are likely to be possible for a particular individual, if any
  • Understand the decision-making flowchart for deciding on laser vision correction procedures
  • Understand the importance of data collection and analysis in refractive surgery and how nomograms help improve surgical outcomes
  • Have an understanding of the shift from PRK to LASIK to SMILE to SMILE PRO and be aware of the new features shortly to be launched for SMILE-PRo - oculign and Hypermetropic SMILE
  • Recognise sight-threatening complications from refractive surgery and how to treat them
  • Recognise and manage common side effects of refractive surgery
  • Be able to discuss the co-management of patients before and following corneal refractive surgery procedures
