Learning Objectives

  • Describe key advances in cataract and refractive surgery presented at AUSCRS 2025, including emerging technologies, techniques, and evidence-based outcomes.
  • Apply relevant clinical pearls to optometric practice, with a focus on co-management, IOL selection, and pre/postoperative patient counselling.
  • Identify therapeutic considerations arising from recent discussions at AUSCRS, including innovations in managing ocular surface disease, intraocular inflammation, and other comorbidities relevant to cataract surgery.
  • Discuss the advantages, limitations and pitfalls of using OCT to diagnose glaucoma
  • Describe the current glaucoma treatment strategy including utilization and interaction of medications, laser and surgery, as well as co-management between optometrists and ophthalmologists
  • Discuss common challenges when prescribing glaucoma medications
  • Understand the goals of reattaching the retina and types of repair in retinal detachments
  • Identify common complications such as recurrent detachment, raised IOP, cataract, and PVR; know when to refer.
  • Explain the overarching repair principles, procedures, and recovery expectations in plain language to patients
