Activity Outline

This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session is designed to provide optometrists with an in‑depth update on key advances in refractive and corneal surgery, enabling improved clinical decision‑making and patient co‑management.

The session will begin with an overview of refractive surgical options, including modern laser vision correction techniques, Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation, and refractive lens exchange. Clinical case examples will be used to highlight appropriate patient selection criteria, pre‑operative considerations, and how to match each procedure to individual patient needs and refractive profiles.

We will then explore the evolving management of keratoconus, starting with a review of current and emerging corneal cross‑linking (CXL) protocols, including approaches for patients with thin corneas. Updates in the surgical management of keratoconus will also be presented, with practical guidance on when to refer and how to optimise long‑term patient outcomes.

The session will conclude with a focused discussion on Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy, covering diagnostic pearls, and both clinical and surgical treatment strategies. Particular attention will be given to how optometrists can play a pivotal role in early detection and ongoing care of these patients.

This interactive presentation will incorporate clinical images, case discussions, and opportunities for questions, ensuring participants leave with enhanced knowledge and confidence in co‑managing patients requiring refractive or corneal surgical interventions.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss laser vision correction options, Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation, and refractive lens exchange, and learn how to select the most appropriate procedure
  • Describe current corneal cross-linking (CXL) protocols, including approaches for patients with thin corneas, and how these influence clinical decision-making.
  • Discuss updates in surgical management options for advanced keratoconus and learn when referral is indicated.
  • Confidently diagnose disease staging, and review both clinical and surgical management strategies for optimal patient outcomes.
