Activity Outline

An update designed for optometrists by sub-specialty ophthalmologists regarding effective referral for conditions such as macular degeneration, cataract and eye lid conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • To review intravitreal therapies available in Australia, understand the mechanism of action of the latest intravitreal medication approved for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (faricimab / vabysmo) and review the clinical trial results for this medication in wet macular degeneration and diabetic macular oedema.
  • • Understand the basic principles of biometry • Be aware of the optics of various lens types (diffractive, refractive, EDOF) • Understand monovision • Know the principles of ray-tracing • Be aware of the concept of "blue light hazard"
  • Recognise the clinical signs that differentiate between benign and malignant eyelid lesions, with understanding effective referral criteria
  • Understand common types and causes of eyelid malposition. Understand the initial non-surgical treatment of eyelid malposition. Recognise the criteria for referral of surgical treatment of eyelid malposition.
