Activity Outline

Held at ophthalmic precinct Parkview Day Surgery and Adelaide Eye & Laser Centre this CPD event is focussed on providing a small group of optometrists an interactive experience of a refractive patient journey starting from education on pre-operative appointments and tests, through to surgery, and post-operative appointment procedure, demonstrating both SMILE and LASIK technologies live and in real time.

Session 1 – 45 mins - pre-operative assessment: The group will be provided with guidance through the pre-operative tests that are used to determine refractive calculations at Adelaide Eye & Laser Centre. This will be hosted by an ophthalmologist Dr Ben LaHood and in which members of the group will be asked to participate.

Session 2 – 45 mins - live surgery: The group will move to ParkView Day Surgery and be split into 2 smaller groups. Group 1 will observe live refractive surgery in theatre performed by Dr Ben LaHood. Group 2 will observe this same surgery in an adjacent recovery area via a live recorded video stream and hosted by Dr Peter Ingham who will discuss, answer questions and narrate the surgery as it is performed.

The group will then be rotated, and Group 2 will observe refractive surgery in theatre performed by Dr Peter Ingham. Group 1 will observe this same surgery in a recovery area via a live recorded video stream and hosted by Dr Ben LaHood who will discuss, answer questions, and narrate the surgery as it is performed.

Session 3 –15 mins - post-operative check-up: Still in split into 2 smaller groups each will observe post-operative check-up process as conducted by Dr Peter Ingham and Dr Ben LaHood.

Session 4 – 45 mins - case discussion: Concluding with case discussion and question time with both Dr Ben LaHood and Dr Peter Ingham.

  • Observe refractive surgery using LASIK and SMILE technology in theatre setting
  • Observe and understand the journey of a refractive patient and how refractive calculations are calculated
  • Observe immediate post-operative results and impacts from refractive surgery
