Learning Objectives

  • Review the anatomy of the vitreomacular interface, the central macula and the aetiology of surgical macular conditions including vitreomacular traction and macular hole
  • Review diagnosis and imaging of full thickness macular holes
  • Review the entity of lamellar macular hole, OCT imaging features and natural history
  • Review surgical management of full thickness macular hole and lamellar macular hole
  • Understand the concept of early worsening of diabetic retinopathy with rapid improvement in diabetic control
  • Understand the impact of new diabetic treatments on diabetic retinopathy
  • Understand role of newer anti-VEGF agents
  • Learn about different types of traumatic cataracts
  • Understand different techniques for lens replacement in traumatic cataracts
  • Gain an understanding of the factors affecting outcomes following surgery for traumatic cataracts
  • To understand clinical examination techniques in differentiating paralytic from restrictive strabismus
  • To identify patterns of cranial nerve palsies, including multiple cranial neuropathies
  • To identify abnormalities in ocular motility that may indicate a life-threatening diagnosis
  • Outline differential diagnoses of common oculoplastic presentations
  • Gain an understanding of initial interventions for common eyelid pathologies
  • Recognise eyelid conditions which require urgent review
