Activity Outline

ACO's Myopia Management in Clinical Practice is a 5 week intensive short course, aimed at therapeutically qualified clinical Optometrists. This course delves into the latest evidence based clinical practice, highlighting the importance of action in response to the current global myopia epidemic. MMCP aims to equip optometrists with strategies to manage myopic patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the epidemiology of myopia from a global perspective
  • Describe the risk factors leading to development of myopia
  • Determine the underlying factors involved in visual development of myopia
  • Review the prevalence, risk factors, symptoms and clinical signs of myopia related pathology
  • Describe and differentiate the most common forms of myopia related pathology, and understand their underlying pathogenesis
  • Identify the clinical tools that can be used to assist in their diagnosis and describe the management options available
  • Discuss inherited retinal disease related causes of myopia and how to manage these cases
  • Identify and explain the significance of a patient’s profile that impact the development and progression of myopia
  • Describe the clinical assessment of a myopic child including cycloplegic refraction, binocular vision evaluation and ocular health examination
  • Discuss the role of additional testing such as ocular biometry in the assessment of myopia
  • Discuss the background and including the evidence from animal studies that led to the development of myopia control spectacle lenses
  • Discuss the use of spectacle lenses as a platform for myopia management and consider the various designs for myopia management
  • Describe requirements to demonstrate efficacy with myopia control spectacle lenses and evaluate the evidence for the various types of spectacle lenses developed for myopia management
  • Discuss the efficacy and application of different myopia control spectacle lenses
  • Discuss the clinical rationale behind using contact lenses in managing myopia progression
  • Identify appropriate patient profiles for contact lens wear in myopia control, including when to initiate treatment, how to monitor progress, and how to assess treatment effectiveness
  • Apply evidence-based treatment protocols in the selection and adjustment of myopia control contact lenses, while addressing common challenges like dry eye, lens intolerance, and variable efficacy.
  • Discuss efficacy and application of different soft contact lenses for myopia control
  • Discuss pharmacological agents that have been explored in humans to slow myopia progression and eye growth
  • Critically appraise treatment outcomes of different pharmacological agents for myopia control in humans
  • Describe the role and prescribing of atropine eye drops for clinical myopia management
  • Critically analyze the evidence for light-based therapies in myopia management including low-level red light (LLRL) and violet light
  • Discuss the mechanisms of action and safety profiles in light based therapies
  • Describe the clinical considerations and recommended guidelines on LLRL use
  • To consider cyan light as an option for myopia control
  • Outline strengths and weaknesses of existing methods for monitoring myopia progression.
  • Appraise the evidence for combination myopia therapies.
  • Understand considerations in myopia management communication with patients and family.
  • Discuss case studies and audience queries about myopia management in clinical practice (interactive)
  • Discuss behavioural modifications to lessen the risk of myopia
