Summary
Optometrists are frequently the first heath care provider to manage retinal emergencies. This talk will provide a case-based illustration of a range of retina emergencies that are likely to present to an optometric practice. Focus will be placed on imaging-based diagnostic techniques and the need/urgency for review by an ophthalmologist.

Learning Objectives

  • Improve the interpretation of OCT and optos wide-field imaging for retina emergencies
  • Improve the management of retinal holes, retinal tears and retinal detachment
  • Better understand the urgency of referral for macular diseases

Associate Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam MBBS, PhD, FRANZCO

Associate Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia and Medical Director of the Lions Eye Institute. He is an experienced retinal specialist that manages all aspects of medical and surgical retina diseases. He practices at the Lions Eye Institute (Nedlands and Murdoch Offices) and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers and his research interest is in the fields of diabetic retinopathy.
