Optometry Western Australia’s last regional CPD of 2024 will be on Thursday 5th December presented by the Southwest Eye Surgeons.
Venue: Southwest Eye Surgeons, 115 Beach Road, Bunbury.
In Person Only Event.
Session Information: The first part of our evening involves examining (hands-on) cases covering a range of topics, giving participants the opportunity to improve their diagnostic skills and to ask questions. The remaining part of the night will be a series of presentations with interactive discussions on topics listed below and the real-life challenges in a busy practice and the working relationships between Optometry and Ophthalmology. At the end of the evening there is time left for group questions and answers.

Topic – Ophthalmic lasers in clinical practice: the what, when, where, why and how.
Summary: Understanding the various types of laser and the less common applications of these. Presentations about indications, complications, outcomes and follow up, and what’s involved for the patient.
Learning Objectives:
- To refresh the participants’ knowledge of the various lasers frequently used in clinical practice and their common applications. The focus will be on the management of cataract, glaucoma, medical retinal conditions and retinal breaks, using YAG, selective laser trabeculoplasty and photocoagulation.
- At the end of the presentation participants should have a reinforced understanding of the indications for laser treatment, what laser treatment involves, how to assess outcomes, and how to explain all these to their optometry patients.

Topic – Ophthalmic emergencies – My real-life approach
Summary: Understand the real-life issues dealing with ophthalmic emergencies in Regional areas with limited resources available.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how the practicalities dictate the management approach of ophthalmic emergencies
- Understand the difference of managing emergencies in theory vs real life.

Topic – Medical Retina
Summary: Understand the anatomical basis of retinal vascular structures with regard to treatable retinal vascular diseases.
Learning Objective
- Triplanar retinal vascular plexuses and its implication in DR, RVO and RAO.
