Learning Objectives

  • gain an understanding on the functional vision loss experienced by patients with ring scotomas due to AMD and how to manage such patients
  • become more familiar with the various peripheral retinal changes that occur in AMD and how these can be detected
  • become more familiar with the ocular conditions optometrists usually experience and challenges faced in domiciliary eye care
  • become more familiar with the factors associated with anti-VEGF therapy in the treatment of neovascular AMD
  • gain an understanding of the clinical classification of AMD
  • become more familiar with the evidence-based modifiable lifestyle risk factors associated with AMD
  • become more familiar with the LEAD trial and the potential role of nanosecond laser treatment for AMD
  • become more familiar with the use of OCT in the investigation of various systemic neurologic disease
  • gain an understanding of how to differentiate macular dystrophies from AMD
  • gain an understanding of the support and services provided by low vision providers and when it may be appropriate to refer patients to such providers
