Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of the challenges of, and the role optometrists can play in, providing primary eye care to patients with restricted freedom of movement
  • Gain a better understanding of the barriers to eye care that CALD people and communities experience and how such services are able to be made more accessible
  • Become more familiar with the elements that can be put into place and processes that should be followed in order to provide more culturally-responsive and culturally-aware eye care
  • Gain a better understanding of the relationship between ocular health and homelessness and the challenges of providing eye care to such people/communities
  • Become more familiar with the increasing use and importance of OCT as a key diagnostic tool for early detection of neurological disease and defects along the visual pathway
  • Become more familiar with the ocular side effects of some systemic medications & how they should be screened for
  • Become more familiar with some of the acquired causes of ocular motility issues and how these may be managed
  • Gain a better understanding of the importance of communication between all providers of health care in the domiciliary setting and how such vulnerable patients' vision requirements can be met and their ocular health can be maintained, managed and treated in order to improve quality of life
  • Become more familiar with some of the techniques required to be used in the optometric assessment of patients with intellectual disabilities
  • Gain an understanding of some of the challenges and issues associated with providing eye care to refugees and asylum-seekers
  • Be introduced to a new technique used to improve adherence to prescribed eye drop therapy
