Learning Objectives

  • Elaborate on what is meant by a ‘secondary IOL’
  • Describe the reasons a patient might require a ‘secondary IOL’
  • Describe the different options for placing a secondary IOL
  • Describe the pros and cons of each type of secondary IOL
  • Understand clinical aspects of history and examination that might sway the IOL choice
  • Understand importance of a preoperative refractive discussion and setting patient expectations
  • Have had the opportunity to discuss nine real cases of secondary IOL patients
  • Have had the opportunity to observe nine surgical videos of lens exchanges for sulcus IOLs, sutured IOLs via different techniques (2 point, 4 point, keratotomy, scleral tunnel), Yamane IOLs.
  • Have a basic understanding of the surgical techniques and principles involved in different types of secondary IOLs and how these may relate to the initial choice of IOL.
  • Have a basic understanding of the postoperative recovery phase
  • Identify a narrow angle
  • Be aware of newer imaging modalities to identify a narrow angle
  • Be aware of changes for indication for peripheral iridotomy
  • Be aware of Plus features that are an indication for peripheral iridotomy
  • Be aware of recent studies in narrow angle glaucoma
  • Understand indications for clear lens extraction in narrow angles
  • Triage narrow angle glaucoma patients
