Learning Objectives

  • Ocular Surface and Lid Lesions 1.1 Develop an understanding of the management for suspicious lesions 1.2 Identify features that may be utilised to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions 1.3 Develop skills for pattern recognition of the common lesions of the anterior eye 1.4 Work in teams with fellow practitioners to collaboratively diagnose ocular surface/lid lesions using skills obtained from lecture material
  • Digesting Diabetic Retinopathy 2.1 Develop an understanding of the classifications of diabetic eye disease 2.2 Gain experience in the appropriate referral timeline for diabetic eye disease 2.3 Understand the role of medical treatment for diabetic eye disease (e.g. Lipidil)
  • Skills Demonstration 3.1 To gain exposure to the steps involved in cataract surgery 3.2 Experience cataract surgery from a surgeon’s perspective through use of instrumentation on model eyes
  • Ophthalmic Emergencies 4.1 Identify urgent sight-threatening and life-threatening emergencies 4.2 Develop an appropriate triage system and management plan
  • OCT Interpretation: How to see the Forest from the Trees 5.1 To develop skills of pattern recognition of common retinal conditions visible on OCT 5.2 Identify normal and abnormal retinal microstructures visible on OCT 5.3 Work in groups with fellow attendees to discuss diagnosis and management of retinal conditions detected with OCT
  • Tracking Vitreomacular Traction 6.1 To gain an understanding of the formation and course of VMT 6.2 Recognise the frequency of asymptomatic VMT and likelihood of management 6.3 To gain an understanding of what is involved in retinal surgery for VMT
  • Interactive Displays 7.1 Gain hands-on exposure to the instrumentation used for detection and management of dry eye
  • Peripheral retinal pearls 8.1 Correctly identify the most common degenerative lesions of the peripheral retina 8.2 Recognise the frequency of asymptomatic findings and likelihood of management 8.3 Understand the biomechanics of the eye and its clinical relevance
  • Plaquenil and other drug toxicity 9.1 Correctly identify the clinical signs and symptoms of chloroquine retinopathy 9.2 Recognise the retinal signs and symptoms of the most common drug toxicities 9.3 Understand the need for collaborative care of patients taking retinotoxic medications
  • Glaucoma 10.1 Identify important clinical signs requiring action in glaucoma patients 10.2 Identify the new glaucoma treatments and their role in optimising the management of glaucoma 10.3 Consolidate knowledge of anti-glaucoma medications and develop confidence in prescribing
  • Spot Diagnoses 11.1 To work collaboratively with fellow optometrists to diagnose anterior eye and retinal conditions from case history and photography 11.2 To understand the importance of case history and obtaining relevant information to attempt diagnosis
