Activity Outline

Primary congenital glaucoma rarely affects infants, but when it does, it can cause significant vision deficits and require urgent intervention. Dr Amy Wang and Dr Elias Kehdi discuss the surgical options available.

This article is part of a topic specific issue of a local journal that reaches the majority of optometrists. It aims to shed some light on the condition but more importantly give detail of the current treatment options that are used for congenital glaucoma. This condition is very rare so exposure in day to day clinic is very limited. Despite that, it is an important condition to have some familiarity with if presented to the clinician.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the three variants of primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) and the presentations for each
  • Realise the role of surgical intervention in PCG
  • Be aware of emerging surgical techniques
