Learning Objectives

  • Glaucoma Diagnosis & Management: 1. Glaucoma classification 2. Glaucoma diagnosis 3. Identify life and vision threatening conditions that simulate the presentation of glaucoma: e.g. chiasmal tumour, optic neuritis 4. Obtain greater familiarity with OCT in regards to glaucoma diagnosis and monitoring
  • Obtain a broader knowledge of glaucoma drops therapies: 1. Summary of current readily available drops: PG analogues, b-blockers, Alpha2 agonists, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, miotics 2. New drops of the horizon: ROCK Inhibitors, Nitric oxide releasing agents
  • Familiarity with laser and surgical therapies in glaucoma and where they fit in the glaucoma treatment paradigm: 1. Iridotomy 2. Iridoplasty 3. Trabuloplasty 3. Cataract Surgery and istent inject 4. Trabeculectomy and tube procedures
  • Medical Retina: 1. Identify vision threatening medical retina emergencies that require prompt treatment 2. Important differential diagnoses of retinal signs eg. retinal haemorrhages, cotton wool spots, macular oedema, exudates, retinitis, chorioretinitis
  • Familiarity with & revision of common retinal disorders: 1. Dry & Wet Age-related macular degeneration 2. Retinal vein occlusion 3. Diabetic retinopathy: macular oedema and retinal neovascularisation
  • Clinical management of medical retinal disorders from an optometry perspective: 1. When to refer 2. How to be involved in the collaborative care of a chronic medical patient in conjunction with the GP 3. Familiarity with the latest evidence based clinical guidelines and management pathways 4. An introduction to medical retina therapies on the horizon
