Activity Outline
The importance of clinical judgement in assessing patients’ symptoms, visual environments and demands before prescribing are emphasised.
Various techniques utilising low powered prisms which can be used to increase the accuracy of measurement as well as procedures to improve accuracy of fixation will be explained. The effect of prism adaptation, its clinical relevance as well is the need for caution before increasing the prismatic correction unnecessarily are included.
Emphasis will be placed on the ability to combine these techniques into a routine which can be used to provide a comprehensive overview of binocularity both quickly and efficiently in daily practice. A method of determining the need for further investigation and or treatment without resorting to time-consuming procedures will be covered.
Dr Alan Burrow will give a comprehensive account of the various cover test techniques and how these can be used to provide a comprehensive assessment of binocular vision and its anomalies including heterophoria, heterotropia both concomitant and incomitant as well as less common conditions such as latent nystagmus and dissociated vertical deviation. Methods of assessing the level of compensation of a phoria are covered.
While the cover test is universally accepted by optometrists, ophthalmologists and orthoptists as a clinical tool in diagnosis of binocular anomalies, a significant number do not fully appreciate the extent and abundance of information which this powerful tool can provide with skilful use by the clinician.
