Activity Outline

An update in Ophthalmology 2024 will consist of small group workshops each lasting a total of 30 minutes in duration. 

Within each session, the presenting doctor will deliver a short lecture with a high level of engagement amongst the attendees with questions answered on case studies and treatment options/methods. 

Learning Objectives

  • Develop a better understanding of the signs and symptoms of the different diabetic eye diseases.
  • Illustrate diagnostic dilemmas and approaches to treatment of retinal conditions.
  • Examine rare and unusual retinal cases seen in referral centres.
  • Understand the causes and risks for patients with retinal tears/ holes/ detachments and epiretinal membranes to advise the best possible treatment and management options.
  • Analyse common Vitreoretinal emergencies signs, symptoms and management.
  • Understand the therapeutic and surgical management of diabetic retinopathy and confidently co-manage patients.
  • Undertake diagnostic testing to form a diagnosis of glaucoma and be able to initiate a glaucoma management plan.
  • Understand what to look for in glaucoma cases to assist in evaluating clinical OCT results.
  • Understand both therapeutic medication and surgical management options in the treatment of glaucoma patients with cataracts.
  • Understand new treatments in Wet AMD
  • Discover and understand new treatments in geographic atrophy.
  • Discuss and understand real world medical retina clinical cases.
  • Recognise common artefacts on OCT imaging.
  • Recognise subretinal hyper reflective material and disorganisation of the retinal inner layers on OCT imaging.
  • Identify common OCT features that can be confused with neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
