Learning Objectives

• Dr Uday Bhatt. At the completion of the presentation optometrists will have a good understanding of the current options in premium cataract surgery and knowing what holds in near future in premium cataract surgery options
• At the completion of this presentation optometrists will be able to know what to look out for on examination, based on slit lamp examination, OCT assessment and symptoms described by the patient in particular when things don't go according to plan, along with an understanding on management of these, e.g CMO and therapeutic management. This will be achieved by providing optometrists with a better understanding of how to manage the problems which can be associated with premium cataract surgery
• Dr Raj Pathmaraj. At the completion of the presentation optometrists will gain an understanding of glaucoma, it's characteristics and presentation, being able to diagnose when it is in fact glaucoma- on examination what are the signs to look for? Optometrists will be able to confidently diagnose and then refer onto and ophthalmologist initiate treatment and then provide ongoing management.
• At the completion of this presentation optometrists will be able to identify the risk factors associated with the over-diagnosis of glaucoma, along with providing therapeutic management for glaucoma when it is in fact not glaucoma. and to be able to recognise the pitfalls with incorrect diagnosis of glaucoma.
• Dr Lei Liu. At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have an understanding of the use and indications to use Selective Laser Trabeculectomy (SLT) therapy. Understanding the mechanisms of SLT and how it can assist with glaucoma management in patients- and how to manage a patient's drop regime post SLT therapy. What glaucoma drops to use and how often?
• Optometrists will have a good understanding of the efficacy and safety of SLT and how it compares to medical/therapeutic and or surgical treatment for glaucoma patients.
• Prof Tim Roberts. To gain a better understanding of how to interpret OCT images in glaucoma and the values that constitute significant change and when treatment is initiated and what type of treatment.
• Prof Tim Roberts. To be able to differentiate between a potential pathological condition on an OCT report and an unusal but not pathological OCT report
• Prof Tim Roberts. At the completion of this presentation optometrists will learn how to triage a red eye patient to determine the cause of their signs and symptoms and to understand the appropriate urgent referral of microbial keratitis, uveitis, endophthalmitis and other red eyes
• Prof Tim Roberts. At the completion of this presentation optometrists will have an understanding to the therapeutic management of viral, allergic and bacterial conjunctivitis.
• Dr Alex Ioannidis. To understand aetiology of Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) and how it arises after cataract surgery
• Dr Alex Ioannidis. Optometrists will be taken to look at our current treatment options for PCO and some common pitfalls that may arise.
• Dr Alex Ioannidis. To explore/investigate assess future treatment modalities to treat PCO
• Prof Rasik Vajpayee. At the completion of this presentation, optometrists will have a thorough understanding of Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK), it's benefits and indications in refractive patients or it's use and functionality in patients with recurrent corneal erosion (RCE), i.e when can an optometrists refer a patient for PTK?
• Prof Rask Vajpayee. Optometrists will gain knowledge in the procedure and post-operative paradigms, including an understanding in post-operative therapeutic management of patient who have undergone PTK therapy.
• Dr Lewis Levitz. Optometrists will be able to choose the correct investigation and assessment for patients presenting with unexplained visual loss or vague visual symptoms.
• Dr Lewis Levitz. Exploring new modalities of investigation will also be presented and the referral pathways discussed
• Dr Anu Mathew. Optometrists will be exposed to varies case studies illustrating various features of the orbit and strabismus, examples include; acute onset esotropia and accomodative esotropia
• Dr Anu Mathew. At the completion of this presentation optometrists will be able to identify various features in common paediatric presentations involving the anterior segment and posterior segment.
• Dr Christolyn Raj. To appreciate the work up involved in a patient with strabismus undergoing cataract surgery and understand the implications of phorias in the post-operative recovery following cataract surgery
• Dr Christolyn Raj. To be aware of sagging eye socket syndrome, the signs, symptoms and management.
• Dr Joe Reich. At the completion of this presentation optometrists will be able to identify the limitations of refractive laser eye surgery, in particular myopic laser.
• Dr Joe Reich.Optometrists will be able to determine suitable candidates of patients who present to their practice with significantly high refrctive errors including hypermetropic, astigmatic and/or both.
• Dr Justin Sherwin. To understand the natural history and ocular complications of high myopia, whilst considering possible interventions to prevent myopia progression.
• To appreciate management options for patients with pathology due to high myopia.
