Undeniably eye health will impact everyone at some point in their life. Whether you’re a sports player recovering from an eye injury, or a parent worried about how your child’s eye health is impacting their learning, maintaining good vision for life is a universal health issue.

This was made evident in a recent campaign run by Optometry Australia, which saw a number of prominent individuals from a range of backgrounds come together to promote eye health and the benefits of regular eye examinations.

Advocates included AFL player and Collingwood forward Mason Cox; prominent Melbourne parents The Real Dads of Melbourne; 2016 Australian Rally Champion Molly Taylor; and bookstore owner and digital creator Jordan Turner.

The partnerships were inspired off the back of Optometry Australia’s first ever national television advertisement, which shone a light on the importance of good vision to enjoy life’s great moments; with the stories shared by these individuals on social media spanning a range of life experiences.

Mason Cox

Eye health has been a massive part of Collingwood forward Mason Cox’s AFL career, having undergone five surgeries in the last two and a half years to repair a torn retina in one eye and a detached retina in the other.

Good vision plays a huge role in Mason’s ability to perform as an athlete, however Mason is appreciative that without his vision, it’s not only his career he’d miss out on.

Via his Instagram account, Mason Cox has opened up about the importance of his vision. Born in America, Mason has spent a significant amount of time travelling across Australia, creating amazing memories along the way that would not have been the same without his vision.

The Real Dads of Melbourne

The Real Dads of Melbourne, Jarrad and Michael Duggan-Tierney, know first-hand the importance of eye health, with Jarrad’s late father visually impaired.

Posting to Instagram the dads reflected on this personal experience and how it’s prompted them to prioritise their family’s eye health.

“We never take for granted the simple moments we are privileged to have, such as being able to see our son grow up.”

With 90 per cent of vision loss avoidable if detected early, the dads’ message is one all Australians should take on board.

Molly Taylor

2016 Australian Rally Champion Molly Taylor is aware how imperative good vision is to her safety whilst behind the wheel. Precision and control is key to her success, which is why Molly undergoes yearly eye examinations.

On Instagram, Molly has encouraged Aussies to prioritise their eye health by booking an eye examination, because “the earlier we start, the better our chances of maintaining good vision for life!”

Jordan Turner

Jordan Turner has a keen creative eye, drawing inspiration daily from life’s experiences through his writing, fashion and digital art.

The co-owner of Sydney bookstore Gertrude & Alice is encouraging other creatives to appreciate the importance of good vision for life, posting to Instagram a montage of his most cherished moments, whilst reflecting on the value of good eye health.
