Learning Objectives

  • To outline the role of vascular autoregulation in maintaining neuronal health in the retina.
  • To understand how vascular autoregulation is affected in vascular diseases, such as diabetes.
  • To appreciate how optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) can be used to aid in understanding mechanisms underlying retinal vascular autoregulation.
  • To understand the parameters that are important for optimising an individual diabetic patient's retinal vascular outcomes.
  • To outline the predictive power of microvascular autoregulation anomalies for functional decline, as a more representative grading of diabetic disease progression.
  • To understand the current clinical classification scheme for diabetic retinopathy.
