Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the mechanisms of action and spectrum of activity of common antibiotics used in eye care
  • Discuss the clinical considerations associated with antibiotic selection and usage when managing ocular infections.
  • Present the impact of laboratory testing, local standards of practice and resistance rates as factors in antibiotic selection
  • Understand the differences in managing acute versus chronic pain
  • Discuss the mechanisms of action of the different classes
  • Design appropriate pain management strategies for ophthalmic conditions in primary care derations of oral medications for ocular disease
  • Become familiar with the indications, contraindications, dosages, adverse effects and precautions of commonly used oral antibacterial and antiviral medications for eye care
  • Increase knowledge of ocular conditions which require oral therapy and evidence supporting use of this method of administration
  • Have knowledge of the pharmacological considerations of oral medications for ocular disease
