Optometrists have a convenient recycling solution thanks to TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box, designed to eliminate the idea of waste by providing recycling solutions for hard-to-recycle waste.

This all-in-one recycling solution makes it easy to recycle various items like eyewear, including sunglasses and goggles, along with contact lenses and blister packaging. It is also a great way to promote that your practice is taking sustainability measures.

The recycling process

According to Fiona Hicks, Head of Business Development at TerraCycle, the blister packs collected for recycling in Zero Waste Boxes are all processed in Australia.

‘Contact lenses and packaging are shredded and then cleaned to remove residual product or other contaminants,’ she said.

‘Metals are sorted, smelted and formed for use in secondary metals manufacturing. Cleaned plastics are sorted by material type and then mixed with other plastics to make recycled plastic blends.’

Additionally, Fiona noted that TerraCycle strictly tracks and controls the movement of all the waste it is sent for recycling and that its processes are annually audited by Bureau Veritas – a world leader in testing, inspection and certification services.

How to get your Zero Waste Box

Optometrists can easily commit to a more sustainable future by following a straightforward four-step process:

  1. Order your Zero Waste Box from the TerraCycle website.
  2. Collect the accepted items to fill the box.
  3. Ship it back to TerraCycle (it comes ready to ship with a prepaid postage label on the box).
  4. Reorder your next Zero Waste Box to continue to recycle.
