Activity Outline

A fingerprint is a unique identifier that has revolutionised security in the modern world. The retina, too, provides a similar fingerprint that can be used as a key universal identifier. Dr Christolyn Raj explains how eye health professions can harness retinal fingerprint technology for use in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of key features in a retinal photo that may link to a disease process
  • Learn to recognise “patterns” of clinical signs in the retina that are typical of an ocular condition
  • Appreciate that a retinal photo is a representation of the eyes at one time and the need to develop a method of recording changes seen in the retina with time
