OWA CPD Metro Evening with Dr Raja, Dr Tan, Dr Gounder & Dr Franchina on Monday 27th November 2023

Optometry Western Australia’s very last CPD will be on the 27th November 2023 at Breakwater Hillarys and will be an In Person Only event for 2hrs Therapeutic CPD.

Activity Outline

Join Dr Vignesh Raja, Dr Irene Tan, Dr Pav Gounder & Dr Maria Franchina for an evening of CPD with 4 presentations during the evening.

1. Dr. Maria Franchina:  Common Clinical Cases in Paediatric Ophthalmology  – This talk will allow us to understand, diagnose and manage common clinical cases in paediatric ophthalmology including common strabismus, leukocoria and swollen optic nerves and pseudopapilledema.

2. Dr. Irene Tan: What To Do When The Pressure’s On? – This talk will review the understanding of glaucoma and provide tips on how to diagnose and manage common glaucoma presentations. It will also review the various ancillary tests important in glaucoma diagnosis.

3. Dr. Pav Gounder: Identifying Eyelid Malignancy – This talk will review the understanding of malignant and peri-ocular lesions and provide education on how to manage these conditions.

4. Dr. Vignesh Raja: Masquerades of Central Serous Retinopathy – This talk will look at central serous retinopathy as well as conditions that masquerade as it. There will be a review of central serous retinopathy and its pathognomonic features as well as an in depth review of other differential diagnoses.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the diagnosis and management of common strabismus conditions in childhood including infantile esotropia, accommodative esotropia and intermittent exotropia.
  • Diagnose the important causes of leukocoria
  • Identify anomalous optic nerves in children including mildly swollen optic discs and pseudopapillodema.
  • Overview of common glaucoma presentations
  • Utility of ancillary testing in glaucoma diagnosis
  • Initial management and risk stratification for glaucoma
  • To help identify features of malignant peri ocular lesions
  • Management of these lesions
  • To be aware of differential diagnosis of malignant peri ocular lesions
  • To help identify CSR and discuss its pathognomonic features
  • To help identify masquerades of CSR
  • Management of CSR and its masquerades

Dr Vignesh Raja

Dr. Vignesh Raja is a consultant ophthalmologist and vitreo-retinal surgeon at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) & Joondalup Eye Clinic. He is also the Head of Department of Ophthalmology at SCGH.
Dr. Raja undertook his primary medical degree in India and completed his 3 year Masters in Ophthalmology from the world’s largest eye care system, the Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology. He pursued further higher specialist registrar training in Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom at Liverpool and Oxford from 2004 -2012 followed by fellowships in glaucoma and vitreo-retinal surgery. Dr Raja moved to Perth in 2013 to do his second fellowship in medical and surgical retina with Prof. Ian Constable at SCGH and the Lion’s Eye Institute, Perth. His areas of expertise are complex cataract surgery, medical and surgical retina.

Dr. Pav Gounder is an international award winning ophthalmologist who was raised and trained in Perth. After completing his ophthalmic surgical training in Western Australia, he spent 17 months in Herefordshire and Wales, UK for his first fellowship with a focus on cataract and oculoplastic surgery. His second fellowship was a further 15 months in Brighton, England where his focus included eyelid, endoscopic lacrimal and orbital surgery. Whilst in the United Kingdom, Dr Gounder was employed by NHS Trusts for cataract waitlist reduction, supervised trainees as a Royal College of Ophthalmology Assessor and co-wrote the eyelid, lacrimal and orbit chapters of the upcoming 5th edition of the Oxford Handbook Ophthalmology. Dr Gounder’s surgical videos have been featured on EyeSurgeryVideos.net and have won prizes at international ophthalmology society meetings.

Alongside working at Joondalup Eye Clinic, Dr Gounder works at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he teaches and trains the next generation of West Australian ophthalmologists. He has published widely in international peer reviewed journals on topics that include the use of technology in ophthalmology, eye infections, periocular cancers and ophthalmology training. He is a member of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society.

Dr Gounder offers treatments for cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic surgery including lid malpositions, droopy eyelids, eyelid malignancies, lacrimal disorders and orbital diseases. He offers surgery for uninsured and private patients across the following hospitals – Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital, Sundew Day Surgery and Perth Eye Hospital.

Outside of work, Dr Gounder enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, gardening and watching the mighty West Coast Eagles.
