Activity Outline

This module aims to help you provide effective eye care for patients from migrant and refugee backgrounds. It should take about 1 hour to complete plus time for assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Use appropriate communication techniques, including the use of professional interpreters, to ensure patients understand their diagnoses and management plans
  • Recognise and respect cultural differences in communication styles, personal space, and decision-making processes
  • Identify signs of anxiety and trauma in patients from refugee and migrant backgrounds and provide empathetic and reassuring care
  • Involve family members in healthcare decisions for patients from collectivist cultures and engage with patients' families as appropriate
  • When presenting management options to patients such as spectacles, consider the patient’s financial situation and access to Medicare and low-cost eye care services
