Several important changes have been made to the General Retail Industry Award. This is the Award that covers most ancillary staff working in optometric practices and optical outlets. It does not cover optometrists, who are Award-free.
- Wages must be paid on a ‘regular pay day’ and employees must be notified in writing of which day is pay day. Changes to pay day may only be made with at least four weeks written notice.
- Public holiday payment: if an employer seeks to give an employee time off instead of payment for working on a public holiday, the Award now requires that such agreement be obtained on every occasion, rather than having such an arrangement as the ‘default’. The default option is now payment at the penalty rate.
